The U.S. Coast Guard rescued two workers from a burning oil platform earlier this month in the Gulf of Mexico. The two male workers were the only people aboard the platform located approximately 50 miles south of Grand Isle.
The workers escaped the burning platform in a life capsule. A Good Samaritan vessel picked them up before an MH65-C rescue helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans lifted them to safety. Rescue workers took the two men to West Jefferson Medical Center where doctors examined them. The men left without injuries.
The oil platform’s owner, Arena, said the platform shut down two weeks ago and was not producing any oil when the fire occurred. The Bureau of Oceans and Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement is investigating the fire’s cause. Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze several hours after it began. Arena retained firefighters to watch for any re-starts of the fire on the platform.
