Alcohol played a factor in two of the three fatal car accidents in the New Orleans area last weekend. It highlights the need for designated drivers, especially during the Mardi Gras season.
In the first crash, a 23-year-old man died when he lost control of his black Nissan sedan and slammed the vehicle into a column on Interstate 10. The victim’s two passengers suffered injuries but survived the accident. None of the vehicle’s occupants was wearing a seatbelt. Investigators suspect speed and alcohol played a role.
The second car accident occurred in Metairie when a 29-year-old man lost control of his Honda speeding on West Napoleon Avenue. The car flipped several times and threw the passenger from the vehicle. The victim’s body landed in a nearby drainage canal. Authorities charged the driver with negligent homicide, reckless operation of a motor vehicle and DWI.
Lastly, a 43-year-old man lost his life when he lost control of his Jeep Grand Cherokee on Chef Menteur Highway. The car struck a fire hydrant, bus stop and a utility pole. Investigators are not sure if alcohol was involved. The accident happened in Orleans Parish.
