New Orleans Fire Department Responds to Coffee Silo Blaze

The New Orleans Fire Department responded to a fire on the seventh floor last month at Silocaf, a local coffee processor. Fire fighters arrived at the nine-story building at approximately 7:14 p.m. at 5240 Coffee Drive. Seventy fire personnel and 22 NOFD apparatuses responded and had the blaze under control just after 9:30 p.m.

Another call for additional manpower and resources necessitated a third alarm after fire fighters arrived at the silo. There was heavy smoke coming from the seventh floor when the fire department arrived.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Some employees of Silocaf think the fire started from something igniting coffee dust inside the silo. The New Orleans Fire Superintendent said the blaze was an example of building engineers and outside agencies working with the NOFD to extinguish the fire. Officials at the scene noted the fire’s similarities with an earlier fire department training exercise practiced by the NOFD.
