Offshore Cook Files Suit for Sexual Harassment

A former employee of Art Catering filed suit earlier this month in New Orleans federal court, claiming the catering company fired him after he complained of his supervisor’s sexual advances. The plaintiff alleges violations of his civil rights.

The plaintiff worked as a galley cook on one of the defendant’s offshore rigs. In January 2007, he alleges his supervisor made repeated sexual advances toward him. According to the complaint, the sexual advances filled the workplace with ridicule and insult, which created an abusive environment and altered the working conditions.

The plaintiff says he complained of the harassment to his training coordinator in May 2007. On the same day he complained, the defendant transferred him to a less profitable rig, according to the complaint. In addition, his employer refused to give him additional work and ultimately fired him.

He seeks damages for mental stress, mental injury, loss of earning capacity, emotional distress, embarrassment, humiliation, compensatory damages, emotional pain, front and back pay and attorney’s fees, among other damages.
