Former Patient Alleges that LSU Hospital Failed to Diagnosis Her Sepsis Condition

A woman filed a lawsuit against LSU Public Hospital last month in Orleans Parish Civil District Court alleging doctors failed to diagnosis her condition. According to the woman’s complaint, doctors at the hospital admitted her in December 2008 after she experienced diarrhea and weakness for four days.

Doctors made plans to treat her for nausea, vomiting, infection, hyponatremia, coronary artery disease, aortic occlusion and cancer. When the LSU doctors later sent her to Meadowcrest Specialty Hospital, the plaintiff claims her sepsis was at such an advanced stage that the staff took photographs to document the condition.

The complaint alleges that the plaintiff may have had sepsis when she entered LSU Public Hospital, or that she developed it shortly after. She accuses the hospital of negligence, breaching the applicable standard of care and failing to diagnose and control her condition.

In February 2011, the plaintiff requested a Medical Review Panel. The panel rendered an opinion in favor of the defendant hospital.
