If your loved one suffered serious burn injures while on the operating table, would you want answers? It happened to a Florida woman who went in for routine surgery. A fire broke out in the operating room, severely injuring her. The victim’s mother said the hospital is not giving her answers on what happened.
As reported at msnbc.com, the 29-year-old woman admitted herself to North Okaloosa Medical Center in Crestview, Florida, so doctors could remove lesions from her head. At some point in the operation, a fire broke out, severely burning the woman’s face and neck. Her mother watched from the waiting room as emergency responders rushed in and flew her daughter to the South Alabama Burn Unit.
The victim’s mother could not believe it when staff told her an operating room fire injured her daughter. However, some medical experts are not surprised by this incident. One doctor said that with electricity, lasers, alcohol and oxygen present in an operating room, there is all the essential ingredients for a fire. Indeed, according to the msnbc.com report, about 650 fires occur every year in operating rooms in the United States.
So far, the hospital staff is quiet on what exactly happened in the operating room. The North Okaloosa Medical Center said an investigation of the fire is underway.
Have you had any horrific experiences like this while in the hospital?
