Researchers are looking at cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli, cauliflower and radishes as a possible source of a compound known as PEITC, which has been shown to have anti-cancer properties. Alone, the PEITC treatment has shown efficacy in fighting cancers like mesothelioma, but when combined with the popular chemotherapy drugs like cisplatin, the effect becomes much more pronounced.
Normal mesothelioma treatments often involve the combination of powerful medications with harsh potential side effects. Interestingly, the cisplatin-PEITC combination has been found to be nontoxic to the sensitive pleural cells that make up the lining of the lungs. This treatment could become a preferable alternative to harsh chemotherapy and radiation treatment.
Also noteworthy is cisplatin-PEITC’s ability to fight chemoresistance, the adaptation of cancer cells to drugs that can cause the drug to become less effective over time. Both cisplatin and PEITC have been shown to become less effective over time as the cancer adapts to them. However, the combined therapy prevented the development of resistant cells while maintaining effectiveness over time.
