Boat Accident Kills New Orleans Man and Another is Still Missing

A boating accident last month on Lake Borgne killed a New Orleans man and another is still missing. A 63-year-old man died in the accident and his 53-year-old brother is unaccounted for, according to a St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office spokesperson. Neither man was wearing a life preserver.

The two victims were fishing and investigators think a mechanical problem with their 18-foot boat caused the accident, which ejected both men into the water. Rescue workers took one man to Tulane Medical Center in New Orleans where doctors pronounced him dead. Authorities continued their search for the other victim.

The accident occurred in eastern St. Bernard Parish, near the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet. Two other men in a separate boat stopped to help when they saw one victim in the water. He was unresponsive and suffered injuries from the boat’s propeller.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office Marine Division and the Coast Guard are all investigating the accident. Doctors plan to perform an autopsy on the victim to find an exact cause of death.
