FDA Plans Safety Review of Yaz Birth Control Pill

Late last month, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a safety review of certain oral contraceptives after concerns that the drugs increase the risk of blood clots. Among the contraceptives under review are Yaz, Yasmin, Beyaz, Safyral and their generic counterparts. The drugs contain progestin drospirenone, which researchers found carries up to three times the risk of blood clots than other birth control pills.

The FDA’s safety review comes in the wake of a published British Medical Journal study that showed women ingesting Yaz and Yasmin were twice as likely to suffer blood clots as women taking levonorgestrel-based birth control were. The FDA plans to fully assess the risks of Yaz and release its findings to the public.

Researchers found that drospirenone-based birth control pills disrupt the body’s process of balancing salt and water. The result is increased potassium levels, which can lead to life-threatening heart problems.

There are approximately 7,000 lawsuits against Bayer alleging that the company failed to adequately warn women about the risk of health problems associated with Yaz.
