Woman Sues Bayer Drug Company for Daughter’s Death Caused by Yaz

The mother of an 18-year-old North Carolina girl filed suit against the Bayer drug company alleging its Yaz birth control pill caused her daughter’s death. Last September, her daughter collapsed at college and later died in the hospital. According to the complaint, she died from a blood clot linked to the Yaz birth control pill. The girl took the drug to treat her acne.

The woman’s attorney said that Yaz is a dangerous prescription drug and the defendant failed to adequately warn users of its risks and potentially fatal effects. Specifically, the lawsuit alleges that Bayer concealed the dangers of Yaz, neglected to warn the public of the dangers, misrepresented the drug and violated consumer protection laws.

According to the complaint, Yaz, Yasmin and their generic equivalents caused approximately 50 deaths between 2004 and 2008. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is now investigating Yaz and other drospirenone-based oral contraceptives. The FDA says women should stop taking Yaz if they experience chest pain or shortness of breath, which are blood clot symptoms.
