Yaz Birth Control Users Two to Three Times Likely to Develop Blood Clots

A recent report from the New York Times cites a British Medical Journal study that found a two to three times greater risk of blood clots in women who took the Yaz birth control medication. The study named Yaz, Yasmin, Beyaz and Safyral as the birth control pills that posed the health risk to users.

As an earlier blog post mentioned, the Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is reviewing the hormone drospirenone, the progestin used in birth control medication. An added effect of drospirenone is that it helps control acne in users, which the Yaz manufacturer marketed in advertisements. Bayer is now facing approximately 7,000 lawsuits from Yaz users, including wrongful death claims.

The allegations against Bayer date back to 2009 when lawsuits claimed incidents of stroke, heart attack, deep vein thrombosis, gallbladder problems, kidney problems and pulmonary embolism. The FDA accused Bayer of averaging the Yaz test results instead of reporting the results individually.

A federal judge denied certifying the claims against Bayer as a class action due to the individual nature of the allegations and injuries.
