Hit-and-Run Motorcyclist Surrenders to Police after Killing 3-Year-Old Girl

A recent blog post told the tragic story of a 3-year-old New Orleans girl who died when a motorcycle struck her at a neighborhood July 4 celebration in east New Orleans. After hitting the girl, the motorcyclist fled the scene. Last week, the hit-and-run motorcyclist turned himself in to New Orleans authorities, according to a story at nola.com.

The 22-year-old suspect surrendered at the police station with his attorney present around 9:15 p.m., according to one officer. The Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office charged the man with manslaughter, hit-and-run and reckless operation. Police say the suspect knocked the 3-year-old girl to the ground with his motorcycle and the sped away in front of witnesses.

According to the sheriff’s report, the little girl peeked out from behind a parked car because she heard the noise of the motorcycles. That is when the suspect sped by her and fatally struck her just before 8 p.m. One witness said the girl’s body spun in the air like a helicopter blade before landing on the ground.

The suspect did not offer an explanation as to why he left the scene after the fatal accident. He surrendered to authorities after a crowd performed a candlelight vigil for the young victim at the accident scene.
