SUV Plunges off Belle Chasse Bridge with Four Passengers

Authorities think heavy rains and alcohol played a part in a fatal SUV crash that took the lives of two Metairie men last month. The SUV had four passengers when it collided with the Belle Chasse Bridge and plunged 40 feet to the ground. Two of the men died in the car accident. All four men were on their way home after working on a roofing job on the West Bank.

In a story at nola.com, the driver of the 2005 Toyota 4Runner veered off the bridge and struck a staircase leading to the ground. The SUV jumped the bridge wall and fell 40 feet to the ground. A 31-year-old and 29-year-old passenger died in the car wreck. Rescue workers transported a 28-year-old and 24-year-old passenger to Oschsner Medical Center.

One of the survivors said the roads were slick from the rain, and that the driver lost control on the bridge. He said all four of them crawled from the wrecked car before two of the men died.

nvestigators think alcohol played a factor in the fatal crash, and they await toxicology results. One of the victims is still in the hospital recovering from his injuries, according to the Louisiana State Police.
