What is Canada Doing about Yaz and Yasmin?

Add the Great White North to the countries with a growing concern over the harmful side effects of the Yaz and Yasmin birth control pills. According to yazontrial.com, Health Canada is conducting a safety review of oral contraceptives that contain drospirenone, due to the risk of blood clots and other harmful injuries. The only two drospirenone-containing contraceptives sold in Canada are Yaz and Yasmin.

Numerous blog posts here have cited the dangers associated with the Yaz and Yasmin contraceptives. Europe and the Food and Drug Administration have already warned women about the greater risk of blood clots, strokes, pulmonary embolisms and deep vein thrombosis linked to use of the pills.

Another risk linked to Yaz and Yasmin is gallbladder disease, which can cause fever, nausea and vomiting. A person can expect to experience a lifetime of digestive issues if surgeons have to remove their gallbladder. Researchers found that the pills could cause gallstones, causing the gallbladder to inflame. The gallstones can be extremely painful and require surgical removal within months after taking Yaz or Yasmin.

A quick Google search reveals that there are a number of online pharmacies still marketing and selling Yaz and Yasmin. With all the negative publicity and lawsuits surrounding the drugs, you would hope that women are not resorting to the Internet to buy the contraceptives.
