You Gotta Fight! For Your Right! To Fair Wages

The employees were so upset that DRC did not pay them what it promised, that the police had to break-up a confrontation between workers and DRC human resources personnel. The employees have now taken their fight to court in a wage claim action against DRC Emergency Services and DRC Marine.

In a report at louisianarecord.com, DRC hired 15 workers in June 2010 to help with cleanup after the Deepwater Horizon explosion. DRC told the workers their wage would be $30 to $40.80 per hour. However, their checks were sometimes as low as $20.03 per hour. After complaining, DRC said it would correct the problem and increased the hourly amount but not to the original promised wage.

For its part, DRC said BP came up short in what it was supposed to pay DRC. Nonetheless, the 15 workers filed suit for unpaid overtime, penalties, the full amount of their wages and other amounts.

Everyone has a right to payment for the work that he or she does and at the agreed-upon amount. There are state and federal laws in place for that specific purpose. Since the BP oil disaster, stories like this are common, unfortunately. The 15 workers here are doing the right thing by asking the court to correct the wage discrepancy.
