18-Wheeler’s Tire Falls Apart in Front of Motorcyclists

A group of motorcyclist’s ride to New Orleans did not go as planned when debris from an 18-wheel semi caused a fatal motorcycle accident last month. While the group was riding near the Louisiana-Mississippi border on I-10, debris from the 18-wheeler’s tire came loose, according to a report at wlox.com.

Pieces of the tire’s rubber started to litter the highway. A vehicle ran over a piece of the rubber, making it airborne. The tire debris then hit one of the motorcycles, causing it to crash. The female rider died at the scene of the crash. An investigation of the fatal motorcycle wreck is ongoing and officials will release more information at a later date.

Even the smallest road debris, such as leaves, can be deadly for a motorcycle. Other road hazards for motorcycles include gravel, open bridge joints, slick pavement, animals, railroad tracks and standing water. Drivers in cars do not think twice about these small obstacles, but they can be dangerous for motorcycles.

Proper motorcycle training and a safety course can help riders navigate road hazards. Riders should learn to use caution and anticipate hazards. Experts advise motorcyclists not to ride in the rain, or at least wait until it has been raining for at least an hour before they hit the road.
