More Plaintiffs for Bayer and Yaz

Another plaintiff joined the growing list of women suing Bayer for injuries linked to the Yaz birth control pill. The latest personal injury lawsuit alleges a near fatal blood clot to a woman in Philadelphia. The woman claims that in 2008, she suffered a bilateral pulmonary emboli and deep vein thrombosis (blood clot). Her injuries were so bad that doctors brought in a priest to her room at one point, according to prenewswire.com.

The woman says her injury would not have happened if Bayer warned her of the dangers associated with the oral contraceptive. Since Yaz’s release, researchers discovered that it could cause an increased risk of blood clots, heart attacks, strokes and even death. A college teen collapsed and died from a blood clot allegedly caused by Yaz. The teen took Yaz as prescribed by her doctor to clear a mild case of acne.

Some of the allegations accuse doctors of prescribing Yaz for off-label uses. The Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is conducting a safety review of Yaz and other birth control pills containing drospirenone. Meanwhile, doctors recommend that women currently using Yaz or Yasmin stop immediately and see a doctor if they develop any physical health problems.
