Pickup Driver Hits Sign and Sign Kills Elderly Man in Algiers

In an awful case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, an elderly man died last week after a street sign fell and hit him on the head. As reported at nola.com, the 71-year-old man was standing at an intersection in Algiers around 5 p.m. The driver of a Dodge pickup truck veered and hit a traffic sign. The sign fell and hit the man on the head.

Rescue workers rushed the victim to a nearby hospital where he later succumbed to his head injury. Police are waiting for toxicology results from the pickup truck driver. At this time, they do not know why the driver lost control and hit the street sign.

Investigators continue their investigation of the fatal accident. A police spokesperson said the Orleans Parish Coroner would conduct an autopsy to determine the victim’s exact cause of death.

Head injuries are not only extremely painful, but they can cause permanent disability and death. While researchers continually look into ways of treating head trauma, the typical head injury patient often experiences an extreme reduction in the quality of their life. Tragically, the elderly man in the above accident lost his life while merely waiting to cross the street.
