Safety Helmet Not Enough to Save Motorcyclist’s Life

Despite wearing a DOT approved safety helmet, a 24-year-old Louisiana man died in a motorcycle accident late last month in East Baton Rouge Parish, according to weeklycitizen.com. The man was driving a Suzuki motorcycle on Airline Highway when a Lincoln Towncar struck him. The impact ejected the man from his motorcycle, according to investigators.

The driver of the Towncar was a 77-year-old woman who suffered mild injuries in the collision. Rescue workers transported both to a nearby hospital where the motorcycle rider succumbed to his injuries. Investigators took blood samples from both drivers, but they do not think alcohol played a factor in the fatal crash.

The elderly woman was crossing the road from a private driveway when the collision occurred. It is vital that drivers be aware of motorcycles on the road. Motorcycles can be difficult to see and drivers often do not hear them until it is too late. Protective gear is not full proof against fatal injuries for motorcycle riders.

The Louisiana Highway Safety Commission says motorcyclists were involved in over 1,800 crashes across the state in 2010. Seventy-three of those riders lost their lives in the accidents.
