Truck Carrying Hazardous Chemical Overturns on Local Bridge

An overturned truck last week on the Huey P. Long Bridge brought out the hazardous materials team, according to therepublic.com. At around 4:30 p.m., the 18-wheel truck flipped over on the bridge. The truck contained tetrabutylammonium, a hazardous chemical used as a waste product, according to Louisiana State Police.

The hazardous materials team reported that none of the chemical inside the truck escaped after the accident. The chemical was in boxes in the truck’s trailer on its way to Alabama. Tetrabutylammonium can cause headaches, nausea and irritation to the skin and eyes upon exposure. State police said nearby residents are out of danger from the chemical.

It took awhile, but workers had the truck back up on its tires by 10:30 that night. Workers transferred the boxes of chemical to another truck and hauled it away. The 32-year-old truck driver had the truck in the wrong gear, which caused it to flip. Louisiana police cited him for careless operation of a commercial vehicle. No one suffered any injuries in the truck accident.
