Minivan Strikes and Kills Pedestrian in Algiers

A tragic accident occurred last week when a minivan struck and killed a woman as she exited an RTA bus in Algiers. In a report at wdsu.com, the car accident happened when the 61-year-old victim got off the bus near General DeGaulle around 8 p.m. She began to cross the street when a 19-year-old driving a Toyota minivan hit her. The woman died at the scene.

In addition to the driver, the minivan carried four passengers at the time of the fatal accident, according to New Orleans police. At this time, authorities have not filed any charges against the minivan driver. New Orleans police are still investigating the accident. The report did not say if investigators suspect speed or alcohol as factors in the car crash.

The New Orleans coroner’s office will conduct an autopsy on the victim to determine an exact cause of death.

People familiar with public transportation know the dangers of exiting a bus and walking into the street in front of the bus. It is difficult for drivers to see someone who appears suddenly from in front of a large bus, regardless of whether it is a controlled intersection.
