Not All RTA Riders Feel Safe Stepping Off the Bus

The recent death of a New Orleans woman as she stepped off an RTA bus has residents concerned about safety for RTA riders, according to a report at wdsu.com. On October 4, the victim got off the bus at General de Gaulle and Rue Parc Fontaine when a passing car struck and killed her.

Issues such as lighting and the lack of a cross walk have riders concerned that another fatal accident can happen again. One rider was a witness to the accident and said that cars drive by the bus stop extremely fast. There is no bus shelter at the accident scene and no stop sign or traffic signals. The rider added that many RTA riders are elderly and cannot run across the street.

What came as a shock to the victim’s family and friends is that a few days after the tragedy, the blood was still visible on the ground. There was only a small bit of sand thrown over the victim’s blood, according to one family member.

Stepping off the bus in high traffic areas can be extremely dangerous for pedestrians. Cars are not always watching for pedestrians as buses pull away from bus stops. If you are a frequent RTA rider, do you think there are some bus stops that need upgrading or repair?
