Rescue Workers Use Jaws of Life to Remove Elderly Woman from Car

Despite the efforts of rescue workers and the “jaws of life,” an 80-year-old woman died in a two-car accident last month in Jefferson Township. The victim was driving her vehicle on Route 15 and Berkshire Valley Road when she struck another car, according to a report at northjersey.com.

Firefighters at the accident scene used the “jaws of life” to remove the woman from her car. Rescue workers transported her to a nearby hospital, but she later succumbed to her injuries. The driver of the second car, a 36-year-old man, suffered minor injuries in the car crash. Police do not know what caused the collision. They do not know at this time if driver impairment or a medical episode were contributing factors to the car wreck.

The accident shut down Route 15 for several hours while crews cleaned the area and investigators searched for evidence. The victim’s vehicle had severe damage to the driver’s side. A spokesperson from the Jefferson Township Police Department said it could be several weeks before they determine a cause of the accident. The report did not say if the drivers were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.

Older drivers have just as much right to the roads as everyone else, but they should take extra precautions. Having routine eye and ear examinations is important as drivers age. Decreased vision and hearing makes anyone more susceptible to car accident.
