FDA Has New Warnings about the Controversial Contraceptive

Our blog post yesterday reported a woman allegedly blinded after suffering blood clots and a coma from the Yaz birth control pill. With all the injuries surrounding the Yaz and Yasmin birth control pill, it makes one wonder why the contraceptive is still on the market.

As reported at wishtv.com, after examining over 800,000 medical records of women that took Yaz and other drospirenone-based contraceptives, the federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said that women who smoke and are over age 35 should not take the newer forms of birth control. These women are at a greater risk of a “serious cardiovascular event” according to the FDA.

Since the reports of serious injuries from the birth control pill, the FDA mandates warnings on the packaging telling users to watch for signs of blood clots, which include leg pain, chest pain and sudden shortness of breath. In addition to blood clots, women have reportedly suffered strokes and gallbladder injuries from the pill.

The drug maker, Bayer, faces about 8,000 lawsuits from women injured by the contraceptive. The FDA advised women still taking the pill to talk to their doctor before they stop using the pill.

Have you stopped taking Yaz or Yasmin in recent years?
