The days are getting shorter, and the temperatures are getting colder. Therefore, the New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) issued a press release last week urging residents to avoid the risk of fires and burn injuriesthis winter. As reported at nola.com, the NOFD has these recommendations to keep yourself and your home free of fires in the approaching months.
Space heaters are convenient and a low-cost alternative to heating a room. The NOFD advises to use heaters only in well-ventilated areas and make sure they are in areas where people or pets cannot tip them. You should never use space heaters to dry wet clothing and keep them away from drapes and furniture.
Candles are popular holiday decorations, but make sure you place them in a non-tip holder. Never place candles near a Christmas tree or near low-hanging decorations. Do not leave candles burning unattended and keep them away from a child’s reach.
Many people have started to use their fireplaces, but the NOFD says to never use green wood, artificial logs or trash to ignite the fire. Always clear the chimney flue before starting a fire, and place a protective screen in front of the opening.
House fires can cause thousands of dollars in property damage along with painful burn injuries. Is fire safety on your mind during the holiday season?
