RTA Bus and School Bus Collide

Last month, a New Orleans RTA bus collided with a school bus on the HOV inbound lane of the Crescent City Connection. In all, 21 adults and children suffered injuries in the bus crash, according to a report of the accident at fox8live.com.

Emergency responders loaded the injured passengers onto one of their medical buses to transport the victims to area hospitals. Rescue personnel took 17 people to the hospital, and four of them were students. The latest report is that all of the injured were in stable condition. Emergency responders treated the four students at the scene and released them.

Video of the accident scene showed the right front of the RTA bus smashed into the rear of the school bus. Police were able to separate the buses and some victims were standing outside the buses in neck braces.

The need for seatbelts on school buses is debated nationwide. While some states mandate seatbelts on school buses, others cite cost as a barrier to retrofitting school buses for seatbelts. Fortunately, no students suffered serious injuries in this accident, but students have suffered serious injuries in other crashes.

Do you think your child’s bus needs seatbelts?
