Medical Misdiagnosis Leads to Mastectomy for New Orleans Woman

A New Orleans woman claims doctors failed to diagnosis her breast cancer, which ultimately led to a partial mastectomy. Now she and six other patients filed a lawsuit against St. Thomas Community Health Center and several other health care facilities that allegedly misdiagnosed her symptoms. She filed the lawsuit in Orleans Parish Civil District Court earlier this month, according to louisianarecord.com.

The woman first consulted doctors in March 2010, complaining of a lump in her breast. Several doctors at various facilities examined her, but it was not until December 2010 when she received her cancer diagnosis. Shortly thereafter, she had to undergo a partial mastectomy to treat the cancer. She filed suit for failure to diagnosis stemming from the doctors’ failure to diagnose her cancer and not following-up on her complaints about her symptoms.

When doctors and health care workers make mistakes, the results can be devastating to their patients. In addition to the physical harm, there is also the financial burden of expensive treatments and long-term care, in some cases. The law holds doctors to a medical standard and if they fail to meet that standard, the victims can recover for their pain and suffering.

Have you ever had a doctor fail to properly diagnosis your symptoms?
