Say Goodbye to Cell Phones Behind the Wheel?

How many drivers did you see today holding cell phones to their heads or texting while driving? Probably more than a few. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) wants to put an end to cell phone use while driving with a nationwide ban on the practice. Under the proposed ban, only calls to emergency services will be allowed while behind the wheel.

While other states have enacted their own laws limiting cell phone use while driving, the federal ban would eliminate hands-free devices, which some states still allow. Only devices installed by car manufacturers, such as Ford’s Synch system, would be allowed under the ban.

One look at the fatality statistics and you might see the logic behind the proposed federal law. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA), over 3,000 car crash deaths in 2010 involved a distracted driver. That number is too high according to an NHTSA spokesperson. The car accident deaths are needless and all because people want to stay connected while driving, added the spokesperson.

An NTSB member added that distracted driving is akin to DUI in terms of roadway danger. News of the proposed ban came to us through this Colorado personal injury law firm.
