Teen Loses her Life in Drunken Driving Accident

An 18-year-old girl from Houma lost her life last week at the hands of a drunken driver in Terrebonne Parish. The victim was a passenger in a pickup truck at the time of the car crash. As originally reported at wdsu.com, the18-year-old driver lost control of the pickup truck around 2:30 a.m.

The driver hit a mailbox and then overturned into a ditch, according to the Louisiana State Police. The driver was wearing his seatbelt, and he suffered only minor injuries in the crash. His passenger, however, was not wearing a seatbelt and police pronounced her dead at the scene. Once troopers arrived, they administered a breathalyzer test to the driver, which he failed. His blood alcohol content was over twice the legal limit in Louisiana.

Officers arrested the teen and charged him with vehicular homicide, reckless operation and possession of alcohol under the legal age limit. He faces over 30 years in prison if convicted.

It is tragic for the victim’s family to lose their daughter at this time of year, especially. Police are on the lookout for impaired drivers more than ever during the holiday season. Getting in a car with an impaired driver is always dangerous no matter what time of year

Have you had to take someone’s keys away from them recently?
