What Will New Yaz Labeling Look Like?

Bayer will have to change the labeling of its Yaz birth control medication to reflect the dangerous and deadly side effectslinked to the birth control pill. This comes after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) held its panel discussion on the health risks associated with Yaz earlier this month.

The new labeling on Yaz will have to warn users of the risks of blood clots in the legs and lungs, according to the FDA. It was an easy decision for the panel of experts, as it voted 21-5 in favor of the new labeling. Despite the presentation of some conflicting studies on the dangers linked to Yaz, over one-third of the experts said there are safer methods of birth control on the market. One panel member commented that Yaz did not help a significant number of users and that given the risks associated with the pill, there are better alternatives for women.

So, Yaz will remain on the market but with labeling about the risks of blood clots linked to the drospirenone-based medication. Since 2009, five separate studies have indicated that pills containing drospirenone have a higher risk of causing blood clots than pills that do not contain drospirenone.

Have you seen the new labeling on the Yaz medication?
