High-Tech Safety Features for Economy Cars?

You probably thought that high-tech safety features like on-board cameras were only for luxury car owners. However, state and federal regulators now want those types of features available for all vehicles, according to an article at wwltv.com. An official with the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission said that features such as an automatic braking system could prevent about 900 fatal car accidents every year.

One obstacle to the safety features for all vehicles is cost. It would add a production cost of about $3,500 per vehicle, and those costs would be passed on to the buyer. Another obstacle is making the safety features mandatory, which offends some drivers who do not want the government legislating inside their vehicle.

It might be awhile before you see on-board cameras on economy vehicles. Until then, one state official says that buckling up, driving sober and overall safe driving goes a long way toward reducing fatal accidents.
