There is No Such Thing as a Minor Concussion

If you have kids who are active in sports, you should know about the dangers of head injuries and concussions. As spring and summer approach, kids will become more active in sports and recreational activities. Even non-contact sports run a risk of concussion injuries, and according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 3.8 million people suffer concussions every year in the United States.

A concussion is a brain injury and changes how the brain cells normally work. When impact to the head or body causes the brain to move rapidly inside the skull, a concussion can result. Some might pass try to pass it off as “getting your bell rung” or a “ding,” but all concussions are serious. A concussion can occur even if the victim remains conscious.

If your child experiences any of the following symptoms after an impact to the head or body, see a doctor immediately:

·         Dazed or stunned behavior

·         Answers questions slowly

·         Behavior or personality changes

·         Cannot recall events prior to the accident

·         Blurred vision and sensitivity to light

·         Sensitivity to noise

Never try to judge the severity of a head injury by yourself. It is better to have a doctor perform a full assessment in order to prevent permanent brain damage.
