The Dangers of a Bicycle Commute

If you prefer to use your bicycle as an alternative mode of transportation, you are probably aware of the daily hazards of being a bicyclist. In addition to negligent motorists, cities can fail to maintain safe roads, which can create road hazards for even the most experienced bicyclist.

While motorists have the benefit of seatbelts and the car’s steel body to protect them in collision, bicyclists have nothing to protect them from the impact of a collision. A helmet can protect your head, but your body and internal organs can suffer serious harm in an impact with the pavement. There are some simple steps you can take to minimize your chance of an accident on your daily bicycle commute.

·         Plan a route that avoids heavy traffic areas – Google Maps offers alternate routes for bicycle commuters

·         Make sure your clothing does not get caught in the bicycle’s chain or spokes

·         Know and use the appropriate hand signals when you approach an intersection

·         Ride in the designated bicycle lane if there is one

·         Wear a safety helmet and minimize your chance of a traumatic brain injury

While there is no way to completely protect yourself on a bicycle, being a defensive rider and staying alert of your surroundings can keep your commute a little safer.
