Follow These Steps When Approaching a Highway Work Zone

Construction zones along the roads and highways are a common sight, especially in the summer. There are obvious dangers to working along a busy freeway, which is why construction zones are dangerous sites for workers and drivers. According to the National Safety Council (NSC), over 100 road construction workers suffer fatal injuries in construction zones each year. Nearly half of these workers are killed as a result of being struck by motor vehicles.

Louisiana ranks seventh among states with the most fatalities in work zones, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Despite the signs and barriers indicating a work zone, too many drivers speed through a construction zone putting themselves and the workers at risk of injury or death. The next time you approach a work zone on the road, follow this simple steps:

·         Adjust your lane position so you are in the lane furthest from the workers

·         Use extreme caution even if you do not see any workers – they are not always visible

·         Obey signs and flaggers and be prepared to come to a complete stop

·         Be aware that lane closures can alternate daily depending on the stage of construction

·         If possible, use alternate routes and avoid work zones entirely

Because of our weather, work zones are not seasonal in Louisiana. Do not hesitate to contact our office to speak with a personal injury lawyer if you suffer an injury in a work zone-related car accident. We offer a free case review.
