Too Many Pedestrian Deaths in Louisiana

Louisiana ranks third amongst the list of highest number of pedestrian deaths in the United States, according to data from the Louisiana State Police Department. Over 1,000 Louisiana pedestrians lost their lives as the result of car crashes between 2000 and 2009. The accidents occurred while the victims were walking on the sidewalk or street.

Like a lot of urban areas, sidewalks and crosswalks are located in high traffic areas with cars traveling at high speeds. Some of these areas do not offer a lot of protection for pedestrians, as they lack designated crosswalks, crossing signals or if they have narrow sidewalks. In addition, some of these high traffic areas have poor lighting, which makes it difficult for drivers to see walkers at night.

Many pedestrian deaths occur at bus stops as well. In some areas, a lone sign designates a bus stop where multiple people could be standing. Safety advocates say that designated bus shelters with lighting at night could drastically reduce the number of vehicle-pedestrian collisions at bus stops.

In Louisiana, a driver has the duty to drive prudently under the circumstances, which means staying alert and watching for pedestrians.
