Man Dies in New Orleans Pedestrian-Vehicle Collision

A deadly pedestrian-vehicle collision last week left a 39-year-old man dead, according to the Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office. The victim was crossing General De Gaulle drive around 10pm when a Honda Accord struck him, as reported at fox8live.com. An 82-year-old man was driving the Honda at the time of the collision.

Paramedics arrived and the victim died at the scene. Rescue workers took the elderly driver to the hospital, but he did not suffer any injuries. Police did not issue the driver a citation and they will investigate the cause of the accident. The report did not say how fast the vehicle was traveling at the time of the collision.

This tragic accident highlights factors in potentially deadly car accidents – pedestrians at night and elderly drivers. As drivers age, safety experts recommend routine eye exams and hearing tests. As reaction time slows with age, it is crucial that hearing and sight remain at acceptable levels for driving, especially in nighttime conditions. Pedestrians will often not come into view until they are under a streetlight, and this does not offer a lot of stopping distance for a driver.
