How to Help After a Spinal Cord Injury

We told you in our Monday blog that New Orleans is set to host a major conference on brain and spinal cord injuries. Automobile accidents are a major cause of spinal cord injuries in the United States. Car accident victims live with painful spinal cord injuries and even paralysis after a car crash.

A spinal cord injury results from an injury that fractures or dislocates vertebrae in the back. When pieces of the vertebrae tear sensitive tissue or damage the nerves that carry signals to the brain, there can be permanent and severe injuries. If the spinal cord can no longer carry signals from the brain to the area below the injury, the victim suffers paralysis below the injury area. Some victims retain minimal movement and feeling in the injury area.

After a car accident or other injury, do not move the victim if you suspect a neck or back injury. Movement can cause permanent paralysis or other complications. Keep the victim still and place heavy towels on both sides of their head to hold the neck in place. If the victim is wearing a helmet, DO NOT remove it. Call 911 and wait for help to arrive.
