A Dozen People Dead from Contaminated Steroid Injections

As of this writing, 12 people are now dead from meningitis linked to contaminated steroid injections, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). An additional 137 patients are suffering with symptoms from the deadly illness. As many as 13,000 people might have received the tainted injections. A specialty pharmacy in Massachusetts shipped the infected vials to 23 states. Hospitals and clinics in Louisiana did not receive any of the steroid shipments.

Officials expect there to be more victims because it takes about a month for meningitis symptoms to appear. Symptoms can include fever, headaches, sensitivity to light, stiff neck, weakness and nausea. Doctors say that not all patients who received an infected dose will develop meningitis. Patients that do develop symptoms can receive treatment, but the treatment takes several weeks and can have severe side effects, according to doctors.

Tracking down the liable party or parties in a medical malpractice case like this can be complex. In addition to the pharmacy that shipped the infected injections, there can be other suppliers that are just as liable for patient injuries and death. A knowledgeable medical malpractice law firm can help you in cases of medical negligence.
