One Mesothelioma Surgery Could Make Breathing More Difficult for Patients

Mesothelioma patients pursue surgery with hopes that the operation will help reduce their symptoms. According to a new study, patients who undergo an extrapleural pneumonectomy (EPP) surgery may lose a significant amount of their lung function. The surgery removes one lung, and many patients thus have difficulty breathing after their procedure.

Researchers analyzed mesothelioma patients and their treatments, and found that patients who underwent the EPP surgery lost a substantial amount of lung capacity. Before the surgery, patients had an average lung capacity of 4.8 liters. After the surgery, the average decreased to 3.5 liters.

Researchers agree that this loss of lung function often leads to an increase in dyspnea, or shortness of breath. As one of the most common mesothelioma symptoms, dyspnea affects many patients, and has been reported to likely diminish a patient’s quality of life.
