A recent Italian study found that the components in green tea may be useful in mesothelioma treatments.
Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is a component in green tea that is a potent antioxidant. Studies have suggested that epigallocatechin gallate may aid the body in fighting different types of cancer, including mesothelioma. Recently, Italian researchers combined EGCG with Vitamin C and a chemotherapy drug called gemcitabine to create a breakthrough treatment called Active Nutrients-Drug (AND).
To test the breakthrough drug, they administered AND to various mesothelioma cells. The ingredients in AND increased the cells cancer-fighting properties in a way that was deadly to other cancerous cells.
Laboratory tests revealed that AND worked by triggering a change from cell growth to cell death in the cancerous cells. The compounds in AND interfere with genes and proteins in cancer cells.
