Former New Orleans Football Player Involved in New Brain Injury Lawsuit Against NFL

Years of hard hits on the football field resulted in a 2011 lawsuit against the NFL, which claimed the league was aware that concussions caused by the game could lead to long-term traumatic brain injuries, but did nothing about it.

Recently, the NFL agreed to an almost $800 million settlement of that lawsuit that would grant all 18,000 former players compensation for any brain injury they may have, cover medical exams for them, and would even invest in medical research on brain injury.

This settlement is something former New Orleans Saints player Rich Mauti says he has fought for since his early career in the 1970’s. However, Mauti stated that the settlement does not address current and future players, which is the reason why he and three other former players have filed another lawsuit against the NFL and a helmet company. Mauti believes that football players need better equipment, medical monitoring and treatment programs for former, current and future players.

“The big thing really is going to be moving forward with the studies and making the game safer today,” stated Mauti, “I’m concerned about the players today and making sure the NFL is doing everything they can to protect those guys.”

The Long Lasting Effects and Dangers of Traumatic Brain Injuries

Our firm commends Mauti’s bravery in stepping forward and putting a public spotlight on the dangers of traumatic brain injuries. Injuries to the head and brain are among the most serious types of personal injury that can happen to a person.

Some of the most common causes of head and traumatic brain injuries include car, truck and motorcycle accidents. Individuals who suffer head or traumatic brain injuries can become paralyzed or develop cognitive difficulties such as memory loss or behavioral and emotional changes. Other symptoms can include consistent headaches and neck pain, blurred vision and dizziness.
