Woman Sues Jefferson Parish Hospital After She Slipped and Fell While Visiting Patient

A New Orleans woman has filed a lawsuit after slipping and falling on a wet floor while visiting a patient in a Jefferson Parish hospital.

The woman states in the lawsuit that she was visiting a patient at the Jefferson facility when a fellow patient spilled liquid on the floor. The woman says that hospital staff was notified of the spill, but failed to adequately clean it up. The woman slipped on the wet floor, injuring her left knee and right shoulder.

The lawsuit accuses the hospital of failing to take appropriate steps to correct a hazard and to prevent a dangerous situation. The injured woman is suing for pain and suffering, lost wages, loss of earning capacity, medical expenses and expensive medical bills.

Premises Liability Law and How it Relates to Slip and Fall Accidents

Under premises liability law, property owners are required to ensure that their premises are properly maintained. If their negligence is to blame for an accident that occurs on their property, then they can be held liable for victims’ medical expenses, lost wages and pain and suffering.

Slip and fall accidents can occur inside or outside a building and are often caused by slippery conditions. Snow, ice and rain can make almost any surface dangerous. Shoppers at grocery stores or malls and other types of commercial buildings can be put at risk if spills are not quickly cleaned up or if recently scrubbed floors are not marked with caution signs.

If a victim’s head strikes the ground during a slip and fall accident or if his or her spinal cord is injured, then the results can be catastrophic. Back, head and brain injuries can require extensive medical care and can result in the loss of wages both now and in the future.
