Hot Air Balloon Plummets to the Ground, Killing 18 Tourists

A hot air balloon caught fire and crashed into a sugar cane field on Tuesday, killing 18 foreign tourists in Luxor.

Egyptian security officials reported that a balloon carrying over 20 tourists was hovering over Luxor when it caught ablaze, which sparked an explosion in its gas canister, then plummeted over 1,000 feet into a sugar cane field.

Eighteen bodies of deceased travelers were strewn across the field around the fragments of the balloon. A security official reported that all 18 bodies were found.

Luxor Governor, Ezzat Saad, told reporters that the victims included French, British, Belgian, Hungarian, Japanese and Hong Kong tourists. Three survivors of the crash were taken to a local hospital.
