Young Man Shot Dead While Driving Car in Hollygrove

Around 3:45 p.m. last Wednesday, New Orleans police reported that someone opened fire on a car, killing the driver and causing the car to crash into a fence and ram the side of a house.

The driver of the car was 21-year-old Gerald Antoine Johnson, who was shot several times. A second victim, also shot multiple times, showed up at Ochsner Medical Center in Jefferson about an hour after the shooting occurred. He was in stable condition, according to police.

According to Johnson’s sister, Johnson had bought the car he was driving with money he saved while working as a welder at Avondale Shipyard.  Once a symbol of Johnson’s hard work, his Nissan Altima now sits smashed, the bumper crunched and windows shattered, with over 20 bullet holes in it.

Johnson’s family members said they were baffled by the shooting. “He’s never been in no trouble,” Johnson’s stepfather told reporters. “Everybody loves him. He makes a lot of people’s day. He’s always got a smile on his face.”
