H&N goes to trial for client hurt on an unsafe staircase that was not up to code

H&N represented a 72-year old man who fell on a staircase in the French Quarter in New Orleans, Louisiana.  The staircase was a new staircase, but it was not up to code under the city’s building code or life safety code.  The unsafe staircase caused him to fall forward landing on his left arm.  The arm broke, causing an open and compound fracture.  He required urgent surgery.  The orthopedic surgeon used 19 surgical screws and three metal plates to repair the arm.  After hearing testimony from H&N expert engineer and the medical doctor, the defendant settled the case for $200,000.  This was a significant victory, as the defendant had denied having any responsibility before trial.
